ERC to attend global social science event

Details have been released regarding the participation of the European Research Council in this year’s World Social Science Forum.

The conference will take place over three days in Durban, South Africa, and the theme for 2015 is ‘Transforming global relations for a just world’. Topics set to be discussed include governance and global inequality; production and consumption patterns; the quality of health and education; and climate change.

The ERC will be represented by Professor Michael Wieviorka, a member of the organisation’s Scientific Council. The academic will chair the session entitled ‘Will elites support social distribution?’, and will also provide information on the role of the ERC in the EU’s latest research and innovation framework programme in the session entitled ‘Horizon 2020: funding opportunities for the social sciences and humanities’.

In addition to the involvement of the EU’s blue sky research funding body, the event includes the participation of South Africa’s Minister of Science and Technology Naledi Pandor, UNESCO director-general Irina Bokova and Human Sciences Research Council chief executive Professor Olive Shisana.

The event takes place between 13 and 16 September 2015 and more details can be found here.
