Ton van Raan to head new ERC expert group

The European Research Council Working Group on Key Performance Indicators has announced it will seek the support and advice of external members from the scientific community through the creation of a new ERC expert group.

The Working Group will seek advice and support from those with expertise in science evaluation and experience in implementing science funding programmes and in evaluation exercises of scientific programmes and institutions. The announcement sees the creation of the ERC Expert Group for Programme Monitoring and Evaluation. It will run for one year, with Ton van Raan at the head.

The expert group will focus on advising the ERC in the further development of its Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Strategy with regards to Horizon 2020. In particular, it will assist the ERC in the design of studies and analysis that could be commissioned externally or undertaken by the internal capacity of the ERC, and conducting small scale analysis and studies on selected topics based mainly on the ERC’s M&E strategy. The expert group will also take into account good practice and experience from monitoring and evaluation activities of national research systems, in particular regarding the ERC’s complementarity and added value.

Involvement  in the ERC Expert Group will include participation in meetings with representatives of the ERC Scientific Council and members of the ERC Executive Agency.
