Huddersfield to host European initiative

As part of European Researchers’ Night, Huddersfield University will be one of a number of UK institutes opening their doors on 30 September.

The event is Europe-wide and attracts more than one million people across the continent. It will be held in several UK university towns and cities.

The theme for Huddersfield University will be Full STEAM — Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths — Ahead.

Esmay Walker, research and impact officer at the university,  said: “We’re delighted to be able to hold this open-door event. It gives everyone in the area a chance to see what difference researchers make to our everyday lives in an involved, hands-on way.

“We are hoping that we can inspire older children to consider a career in research and help people to understand how important research is.”

The events showcase what researchers do for society, in interactive and engaging ways, and promote research careers to young people and their parents.

Attractions will include ‘The Magic of Science’ and high energy chemistry activities for budding scientists.

Other events for the European Researchers’ Night will take place across the UK in London, Oxford, Manchester, Newcastle, Belfast, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Strathclyde, St Andrews and Edinburgh.

Last year, more than 280 cities took part in this annual event. The events are funded by the European Commission as part of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions pillar under Horizon 2020. This programme aims to boost European research careers.
