PEARRL pushes innovation through research

PEARRL is a European Training Network (ETN) funded under the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions that combines the pharma industry, academia and regulatory agency partners to develop innovative strategies.

Delivering novel bio-enabling formulations and new biopharmaceutics tools to predict their in vivo performance as a means to improve efficiency and cost-competitiveness in drug development, PEARRL (Pharmaceutical Education and Research with Regulatory Links) helps to facilitate earlier access to ‘breakthrough therapies’ for vulnerable patients.

European pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries are major contributors to EU wellbeing. To maintain global leadership, these industries must respond to challenges of declining product pipelines, and increasing research and development costs by bringing innovative drug molecules to the market.

EU authorities have thus introduced a regulatory framework to improve patient access to new drugs with the aim of facilitating earlier patient access to breakthrough therapies. To fully realise the potential of PEARRL, the pharmaceutical industry must respond to challenges by developing novel, bio-enabling formulations that unleash the full potential of new drug candidates whilst compacting their development into the tightest of timelines.

PEARRL began in May 2016, running for four years. It combines an innovative research programme with an excellent training programme for early stage researchers (ESRs).s

PEARRL aims to train 15 ESRs who can develop bio-enabling formulations (i.e. better drugs); biorelevant and in silico methods to predict formulation performance in vivo (i.e. streamlined development); and collaborating/co-operating with research and regulatory science.

The research training with PEARRL will provide ESRs with new career perspectives by transmitting a new skill set for challenging working conditions. PEARRL will also contribute to the EU’s objectives in Horizon 2020, emphasising the excellent science, industrial leadership and societal challenges pillars.

PEARRL aims to drive innovation and economic growth whilst creating opportunities for researchers.
