China and EU hold further R&I collaboration talks

China’s vice-premier has emphasised the importance of co-operation in research and innovation in a meeting with European Commissioner Carlos Moedas.

Liu Yandong said that she hoped the EU and China could intensify collaboration, and advocated for the implementation of the new co-funding mechanism that was agreed last week. The new tool encourages joint research and innovation activities between the EU member states and the Asian country.

The vice-premier also commented that the country was focused on realising its innovation-focused development plan, which would aid the quality and efficiency of the country’s economic development with technological innovation. In addition, Liu called increased exchanges of early researchers between China and the EU.

The meeting is the latest in a series of research and innovation talks between the EU and China, following the EU-China Summit in June and a visit to the country by Moedas last week.

Yandong will visit several countries in Europe during her tour after arriving in Belgium on Monday. On Tuesday, she co-chaired the third meeting of the ‘China-EU high-level people-to-people dialogue’ with European Education Commissioner Tibor Navracsics in Brussels.
