EAMBES announces H2020 position paper

The European Alliance for Medical and Biological Engineering and Science (EAMBES) has released a position paper on Horizon 2020. The group calls for the specific inclusion of biomedical engineering in Horizon 2020, which it says would assist the European Commission in tackling chronic diseases.

The report said: “Biomedical engineering is a cross-disciplinary science based on medicine, biology and engineering. It is fundamental for a variety of highly innovative technologies and products or processes of the health care sector.

“Biomedical engineering should be understood as a stand-alone discipline to better utilise resources and fully realise the corresponding opportunities. It is thus important that the EU recognises the full potential of biomedical engineering and consequently promotes collaborative research in this field.”

The policy document presented nine recommendations to assist healthcare and health technology research and innovation in Europe, including increasing funding for biomedical engineering research, better supporting the full innovation cycle, deliberating the regulatory framework, and a greater balance in EU R&I in biological, medical and technological research to help tackle the EU’s grand societal challenges.
