Robotics research and innovation under Horizon 2020

The European Commission’s vision for robotics is to secure EU academic excellence and groundbreaking research results in particular in those market sectors where the European robotics industry is particularly strong and in markets with high growth potential.

The Commission said its priority is to define the first Horizon 2020 framework programme for robotics and cognitive systems, including research and development, and innovation actions. It also wants to facilitate the co-ordination within the directorate general of robotics research and innovation activities.

Europe is being urged to pool its research and innovation effort to ensure leadership in industrial and service robotics in the next ten to 15 years.

There are still many challenging unsolved scientific and technological problems which are preventing a broader adoption of robotics technologies and the deployment of artificial cognitive systems. These problems can only be solved by sustained support of fundamental research in robotics and cognitive systems, said the Commission.

It is envisaged that spending on robotics will be around €200m under the Horizon 2020 programme in the years 2014-2015.

The Commission wants to cause improved innovation capabilities in robotics, more seamless integration of research, and industrial innovation, as well as higher and more co-ordinated investments in robotics and cognitive systems research. It also wants to bring about innovation acceptance by end users and the society, strengthened competitive position of the European robotics industry, the emergence of new robotics technologies, products and solutions, and bringing manufacturing back to Europe.
