SESAR 2020 begins exploratory research

The first SESAR 2020 exploratory research projects aiming to modernise air traffic management (ATM) in Europe have begun.

Funding of €20.4m has been made available by the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SJU) for 28 selected projects within the framework of SESAR 2020 and the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

The projects will run until 2018, bringing universities, SMEs, research centres, airlines, industries, air navigation service providers (ANSP) from across the EU and associated countries (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Serbia, Israel and Turkey) together. The projects’ objective is the creation of a SESAR innovation pipeline, wherein innovations can be interlinked with industrial and demonstration research networks.

Whilst covering a range of topics, the projects have been categorised into just two areas. The ATM excellent science & outreach area aims to bridge ATM research with the wider research community, providing scientific support to ATM either directly or through its network of funded research in other disciplines such as in robotics and automation, data science and information management, environment and meteorology, and legal, regulatory and economics matters.

The ATM application-oriented research area aims to establish new concepts for ATM beyond those identified in the European ATM Master Plan, as well as to encourage emerging technologies and methods to the required level and to feed the applied research conducted in the SJU.
