H2020 topics released for bioeconomy research

A Horizon 2020 call has opened for the Bio-Based Industries (BBI) public private partnership (PPP).

The €100m call opened on 19 May for research proposals with three research topics, namely: ‘From lignocellulosic feedstock to advanced bio-based chemicals’, ‘Valorisation of cellulose into new added value products’ and ‘Innovative processes for sugar recovery and conversion from Municipal Solid Waste’.

The BBI PPP, which takes the form of a joint technology initiative (JTI), was launched under Horizon 2020 last year. According to the European Commission, the scheme ‘is dedicated to realising the European bioeconomy potential, turning biological residues and wastes into greener everyday products through innovative technologies and biorefiners’. The JTI has a budget of €3.7bn over seven years.

The call falls under the Societal Challenges pillar, and research submissions can be made to the Commission until 15 September.
