€85m available for online safety through Horizon 2020

Funding is available now for cyber security under Horizon 2020. The European Commission is seeking to develop trustworthy ICT solutions guaranteeing a secure and reliable digital environment in Europe.

Horizon 2020 addresses security, trust and privacy in a coherent way from technological, economic, legal and social perspectives. It is hoped that this will help promote innovation and economic growth in the EU, whilst protecting Europe’s society, economy, assets and fundamental rights.

Cyber security and online privacy can be found within two research areas in Horizon 2020: Societal Challenges’ ‘Inclusive, innovative and secure societies’ objective and the ‘Industrial Leadership’s investment in ICT’.

The Commission will invest at least €500m in projects dealing with cyber security and online privacy under Horizon 2020. €350m has already been invested in this strategic field, along with €85m is available this year.

Projects currently funded include allowing applications to be used anonymously and guaranteeing the components of a smartphone are genuine. Research partners include research institutes, SMEs and large firms. There are also plans to develop a European Advanced Cyber Defence Centre.
