Five major H2020 calls open for transport and energy research

The European Commission has opened funding calls worth €550m for research into transport and energy.

The call for project proposals, which fall under the ‘Smart, green and integrated transport’ and ‘Secure, clean and efficient energy’ Societal Challenges, are in the fields of mobility for growth, low carbon energy and smart cities.

The first call, entitled ‘TwoStages’, focuses on increasing resource efficiency of aviation and road transport; a budget of €144.5m is available and there is an initial call deadline of 23 April 2015, followed by second stage deadline of 15 October 2015. The second call, ‘SingleStage-A’, is encouraging greater international co-operation in aeronautics between the EU and China, Japan and Canada and a funding budget of €21m is available with a deadline of 23 April 2015.

In the field of competitive low carbon energy, the third call to be released will receive €93m of funding dedicated towards further developing renewable electricity demonstration projects, heating/cooling technologies and advanced biofuel technologies. The next call focuses on bringing more renewable electricity, sustainable bioenergy products and large capacity energy storage facilities to market. Money is also available under the call for developing a framework for assessing the energy efficiency of the ICT sector. The deadline for submitting project proposals to both calls is 5 May 2015.

The final call targets smart cities and with a budget of €107m, the Commission is looking for project proposals centring on large scale demonstration projects concerning the integration of energy, transport and ICT sectors in the urban environment. Developing system standards for smart cities is also emphasised. A deadline of 5 May 2015 has also been set.
